Privacy Policy

The short version: Plot Compass collects as little data as possible. We don't sell your data, we don't run ads, and we don't track you across the web. Your outlines are yours.
What we collect
If you use Plot Compass without an account (Guest Mode)
Nothing. Your outlines are stored locally on your device. We have no access to them. No cookies are set, no personal data is collected, no analytics track your individual behavior.
If you create an account
We collect the minimum necessary to provide cloud sync and authentication:
- Email address (for login)
- Outline data (if you enable cloud sync)
- Account preferences (theme, settings)
If you sign in with Google or Discord
If you choose to sign in with Google or Discord, we receive your email address, display name, and profile picture from that account. This data is used solely for authentication and displaying your account information within Plot Compass. We do not access any other account data — no contacts, no files, no messages.
Plot Compass's use and transfer of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
If you sign up for the newsletter
We collect your name and email address. This data is used only to send you the newsletter. We don't share it with anyone, and you can unsubscribe at any time.
If you connect your Patreon account
If you're a Patreon supporter and choose to link your account, we store the minimum information needed to verify the connection and display your supporter badge in the app. We don't access your payment details or any other Patreon data.
If you enable encryption
Your outline data is encrypted end-to-end before it leaves your device. We cannot read, access, or decrypt your content. We genuinely don't have the keys.
Analytics
We use Umami, which is privacy-focused and cookieless. It collects aggregate data about page views and performance metrics. It does not track individual users, set cookies, or collect personal information. There's nothing to opt out of because there's nothing identifying you.
Cookies
Plot Compass uses cookies only for essential functionality:
- Authentication cookies — if you create an account and log in, a session cookie keeps you signed in.
- Preference cookies — your theme selection and local settings.
We do not use advertising cookies, tracking cookies, or third-party cookies of any kind.
Third-party services
Plot Compass uses the following third-party services:
- Cloudflare — hosting and CDN
- Umami — privacy-focused, cookieless analytics
- MailerLite — newsletter delivery (if you subscribe)
- Patreon — account linking for supporter badges (if you connect your account)
- Supabase — authentication and database for account holders
- Google — optional sign-in via Google OAuth (if you choose this login method)
- Discord — optional sign-in via Discord OAuth (if you choose this login method)
We do not use Google Analytics, Facebook Pixel, or any ad-tech tracking services.
Data storage and security
Guest mode data is stored locally using your browser's IndexedDB. It never leaves your device.
Account data is stored on secure, encrypted infrastructure. Optional end-to-end encryption means even our infrastructure cannot access your content.
Your rights
You can:
- Use Plot Compass without providing any personal information (Guest Mode)
- Export all your data at any time (Markdown, Word, or JSON)
- Delete your account and all associated data
- Enable encryption to ensure complete privacy of your content
Children's privacy
Plot Compass can be used without an account and without collecting any personal data. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. Guest Mode is safe for use by students of any age.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, we'll update the date at the top and note what changed.
